Reversed Polarity...Fried Lucas alternator

Yes, I did it. My question is :
Can I just replace the rectifier and regulator and make it all better?

My alternator has no part number but the regulator is Lucas 37581.
I'm going on it being a 17ACR based on the 1976 date on the cover.
The rectifiers I see available are 23-48 A for 16ACR - !8ACR. Since I don't know the capacity of this unit, can I screw up by putting in the higher amp rectifier? Funds are limited or I would just buy a rebuilt one.

You should be able to just replace the voltage regulator, but replacing the bridge rectifier wouldn't hurt. You would also have to check any remaining diode sets inside the alternator. There is usually diode trio attached to the bridge rectifier.
